I am new to site maps and I am just learning how to do websites. I have just downloaded a site map in a text file and i would like to know how to put it on my website. do i need to put sitemap on the front page and then have a link to that page with the text site map on. I would very grateful for your help

Hello,

you should upload sitemap.xml file to your domain root via FTP and then submit it to Google on:
http://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/siteoverview

Now you can also  put path to  sitemap in file robotst.txt
for example:
sitemap: somedomain/sitemap.xml

Yes, you can add it in robots.txt with FULL url:
sitemap: http://wwww.somedomain.com/sitemap.xml

Yep, I've done that already too. Several times. Get the same thing each time. Google says "Unsupported file format
Your Sitemap does not appear to be in a supported format. Please ensure it meets our Sitemap guidelines and resubmit." Angry
