I tried creating sitemap.xml, sitemap1.xml, and etc., and turned on compression. "Sitemap.xml" was filled again to the limit and none of the other sitemaps were touched. I was rejected by Google since the file size was too large. What is the correct procedure to create the sitemaps in the root directory so that I don't get crap from Google?

Hello,

if you turn on compression, you should create sitemap.xml.gz, sitemap1.xml.gz etc. files, not sitemap.xml. and submit http://www.domain.com/sitemap.xml.gz to Google.
