Does Sitemaps Check EXTERNAL links?

I haven't seen a clear-cut answer to this question so thought I would ask.

I have a massive amount of links to other websites, and haven't found a tool yet that I like for checking to see if external links have died, so I can remove them.

I'll buy your system in a second if I can be assured that you will easily identify dead links to websites outside of my own.   What say you?

sitemap protocol doesn't allow to include URLs from external domains in a sitemap, so sitemap generator doesn't follow those links.
