Google encounters an error

Have used XML site generator for ages now and not had a problem but suddenly Google is saying

We encountered an error while trying to access your Sitemap. Please ensure your Sitemap follows our guidelines and can be accessed at the location you provided and then resubmit.

I changed my hosting in January but I'm pretty sure it hasn't been a problem since then - just in the last month. Have I wigged out and put it in the wrong folder or something (put it in my public html folder). The other thing is that when I try to open the xml folder on my desktop it won't open - I can't remember if it ever did.

Please help!

it seems to be related to your server configuration, perhaps there were changes in it recently and now it restricts access to your server for google bots.
