Sitemap under 10,000 URLs and over 10MB

Any idea why this file is so big?

If I should split this into multiple files, do I submit each sitemap to google separately or is there a link in the sitemap to jump to the next file?

the file is about 2.2Mb in size, which meets the requirement for xml sitemap, feel free to submit it to google: https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/dashboard
(up to 10Mb or 50,000 URLs per file is allowed by xml sitemap protocol)

I dug into the sitemap last night and found that the image info was making it huge. I unchecked Include images information in the config and the sitemap shrunk.

Would be nice if I could disregard banner ads and keep the image info from the content. Don't know if that's possible though.

you can use "Exclude URLs" setting for that - it is applied to image URLs as well.

What exactly would I add to the Exclude URLs box? I already chose the settings for Joomla and phpBB. Should I add anything else?

Depending on which images you don't want to include in sitemap. For instance, adding this:
images/

will exclude all images from images/ folder.
