Where is the public html folder on my site?
« on: June 18, 2008, 06:58:49 PM »
Hi. Sorry for the generic question, but I need help. I know it's in the html directory, but where is that? I want to make a site map, so I've used the sitemap generator thing, and it told me this: Download the sitemap file here and upload it into the "public_html/" folder of your site ([ External links are visible to forum administrators only ]). Okay, so since I have no idea where the directory is, can I please get some help? Thank you....Mikael

That is the directory where your domain root files are located (it may be called "public_html" or "www" or differently).

I read the response of "That is the directory where your domain root files are located (it may be called "public_html" or "www" or differently)." but I don't have a folder like that. I maintain a website that someone else created, each folder relates to a page on the website.  Do I need to create a public_html folder? Sorry, I'm a newbie to these sitemaps.

The folder name may be different (in some cases it's called "public_html", in other case "htdocs" or "web" or "yourdomain.com"), sitemap should be uploaded to the folder where your website is already located, you should never create public_html folder manually.

Hello Oleg,

I created my web site using 'Publisher' in Vista and published it . Publisher created a folder: 'index_files' and a HTML document: index.html

I uploaded them to the directory 'httpdocs' in the server. These are the folders in my server's directory: anon_ftp; bin; cgi-bin; conf; error_docs; httpdocs; httpsdocs; pd; private; statistics; subdomains; web_users.

So, I too cannot find such a folder public_html and I don't know where to put this sitemap file? I simply put it httpdocs together with my index_files folder and index.html

I have done all two months ago, and today I updated my website and created another sitemap document, then noticed a folder in the 'mywebsite' folder in my computer in which I save my pub document and also publisher saves the index folder and html document. The name is 'public_files'

Honestly, I don't remember when I created this folder.. It contains those files: colorschememapping.xml; filelist.xml; sitemap.xml; and themedata. I don't think that I saved all in this folder but I have never noticed that publisher created such a folder in this folder, and this folder is certainly not a crowded folder, there are only 3 items.. and I just noticed it today? Though, I was almost blindly trying to make things work back then, maybe I created it?

I uploaded this folder in my main directory on the server today, but I don't know where to put it. All my files have been uploaded in the httpdocs. Should I put this folder there, or should I simply upload it next to httpdocs folder?

It would be highly appreciated if you could help me on this.

Thank you,

Neela

You should upload resulting "sitemap.xml" file into "httpdocs" folder on your server in your case.
