Site Map creation

Are both sitemap files updated?  sitemap.xml  and sitemap.xml.gz?  How can you determine when a sitemap was created? Is there a date in the file?

When resubmitting site maps to Google it appears that only the sitemap.xml.gz file was new.

Thanks,

Jeff

Hello,

only one of them is updated - if you have gzip compression option enabled, then sitemap.xml.gz file is recreated by generator.

How do you update both?  I need the sitemap.xml and sitemap.xml.gz both updated.

Hello,

there is no need in having both sitemaps, since they contain the same set of URLs.
If you definitely need both you can create sitemap with gzip disable first, then create another one with compression enabled.

FYI, I found an alternate solution to view the xml.gz file.

I can download the xml.gz file and view formatted in MS Word to review what pages are being crawled.

Also, FYI, some SEO tools do not recognize the xml.gz file ... only recognize the xml file.

Also, you can setup 2 instances of sitemap generator, one configured for non-compressed sitemap and another one for compressed sitemap.
