why to rename "sitemap.xml" to "google-sitemap.xml"

Dear All

I was reviewing a robots file of one site and had noticed that the sitemap being crawled is named as [ External links are visible to forum administrators only ]google-sitemap.xml. I mean in robots it was mentioned as:
Sitemap: [ External links are visible to forum administrators only ]google-sitemap.xml

I just wonder does it make a difference renaming sitemap this way, in fact adding a word "google" in sitemap.xml

Thoughts?

Sitemap.xml is the default, but as XML-Sitemaps Support mentioned you can name it anything. You can let google and bing know about any "non standard" named sitemap files via Google Webmaster tools and Bing Webmaster Tools or in the robots.txt like you mentioned in OP.
