Make sitemap inaccessible to users
« on: February 28, 2012, 12:04:58 AM »
I would like to have my xml sitemap created and constantly updated search engines, however, I would not like my users to be able to type in the www.<sitename>.com\sitemap.xml and actually be able to view the site map. Would I be able to move the sitemap.xml file from my root and put it somewhere else so it is not accessible to users but still updates search engines correctly?

Hello,

search engine bots should be able to access your sitemap, so it can't be moved to a place where it's blocked. However, you can choose a filename for your sitemap like "myown_sitemap_423432.xml" so noone would guess where it is.
