Submitting partial sitemap - okay?

Hello,

I am curious whether its okay to submit a partial sitemap, ie. not every single url of the website.

For example if I have a summary page that includes page1,2,3 ... can I just include page1,2,3 and not the summary page in the sitemap. 

The reason I ask is because of the size of the site I am working on and relevancy of content.  I am curious if a partial sitemap is sufficient and have the spider pick up whats left.

Does that make sense or do sitemaps have to include every url of a website?

For the large site it might be reasonable to include only the most important URLs in sitemap.
