Cron job crawler not working?

I set my cron to run the crawler once per week. I checked my XML sitemap script today and the last run time was a manual run I did on 5 August.

How does the cron crawler work? Does it create a new sitemap or updates an existing sitemap?

There must be a new sitemap created in case if cron job is setup correctly. Check your cron log or setup it to send you an email after cron job is finished.

When i visit the crawl page,  I see a job that did not complete.

it means that you should increase the max_execution_time setting in php configuration.
