How often should you submit a sitemap and how many?

Hi all,

Been using this site for a while and I use it to re-create my sitemap about once a month when more pages are added.

Just wondering, In your webmaster menu for sitemaps it appears that Google gives you the option to add more sitemaps, what's this for? Why would you need more than one for one site?

Also, how often should you re-submit your sitemap?

In case if your site is large, sitemaps should be separated in multiple files (maximum of 50,000 URLs per file).
