Over 50,000 urls in site map

Now that Google has put a limit on sitemaps, how do you create have the program stop at say 45,000 on sitemap.xml and go on to say sitemap1.xml?  My site has over 1 million links.

Another thing... On the set up page when it loads in my URL should it have a "." behind it? 

It shows something like [ External links are visible to forum administrators only ]. < -- with the . behind it.

Is that right?

Hello,

Standalone sitemap generator will automatically split sitemap onto multiple files with 50,000 URL max in each file.
You don't need '*.*' mask in Starting URL - just domain name.

The program keeps stopping (timing out) when crawling. 

Any advice?  It adds like 400 urls, then times out.
