Meta Tag For Sitemap.xml

I cannot add the sitemap string to the robot.txt file so...

Is a viable alternative to use the meta tag option?

<link rel="sitemap" href="sitemap.xml" type="application/xml" />

Is this the best option if you can't add it to the robots.txt file?

It's not that important, Sitemap generator automatically pings major search engines every time sitemap is created. You can also manually submit sitemap in google webmaster account: [ External links are visible to logged in users only ]
