ugh...what am I doing wrong? Crawler stops - will not finish

The installation process went smoothly. My crawl started then stopped. I believe it was out of allocated memory at 33mb. So, I increased the allocation in the php.ini file. I reconfigured the set-up (to exclude URL's of certain folders). I restarted and was going along just fine - but now it's hung up w/ no further progress. 7140 pages indexed in 25 hours - it's not even going as far as when I increased the memory. This is frustrating.
