What Do I Have to Do to Create Multiple Sitemaps

I just submitted my sitemap to Google and got this error reading:
Sitemap file size error
Your Sitemap exceeds the maximum file size limit. Please create multiple Sitemaps containing fewer URLs to meet the file size limit

I thought this software automatically recreated multiple sitemaps.  I have a large website.  What do I have to do to have multiple sitemaps?

Yes, it automatically splits sitemap. Please try to decrease 'xs_sm_size' setting in config.inc.php file and regenerate sitemap.

It stated 40,000 - should I decrease it to 20,000?  Also , if I want to exclude certain url's such as:
http://www.mydomain/netshop - I know there is a place in the configuration where it states exclude url's and has a list like p= mode=, etc.  Do I list the url I want to exclude at the end of this list?  How do I list it?  The entire domain or /netshop or *netshop" or what?

You should enter it in "Exclude URLs" option without domain name:
