Unsupported file format

Hi I have tried to add a sitemap for my bosses website at work and it comes up with this error

"Unsupported file format
Your Sitemap does not appear to be in a supported format. Please ensure it meets our Sitemap guidelines and resubmit. Help "

I downloaded a html sitemap
Now the site is built on microsoft front page and the pages are in htm format

Im wondering if this is the reason why this isnt working?
also is their a problem with running htm pages? if so could you guide me to some information about it...

you should submit XML sitemap, not html one.
