Sitemap in same domain different directories

Is it correct to have two sitemaps in different directories at the time in the same domain?

I.e.
path1 myDomain/sitemap.xml
path2 myDomain/blog/sitemap.xml

I just integrate a wp-blog in my site and may use  Google (XML) Sitemaps Generator for WordPress but it just generates a sitemap inside blog directory and i have already set one in the root directory but haven't included the blog url. I'm on it but first I would like to know your opinion.

How could have sitemaps distributedaffect my site? Should I have just one sitemap?

yes, it is allowed to have more than one sitemap for site, like in your example - one for the blog and one for other site areas.
