Dividing XML sitemap generation into sections to allow for a large site.

Like most of us here I'm getting the memory errors if I try to create an XML sitemap over 2500 pages.  Is there a way to target specific sections of the site in order to build the sitemap piece by piece?

An update: sitemap generation was finished by setting up a cron task.
