Sitemap Generator and the Canonical Element
« on: May 26, 2009, 07:54:26 PM »
I was wondering if the sitemap generator uses the canonical element or not?  I've got some duplicate content issues on my e-commerce site that I think the canonical element can help with, but I want to know if I add this tag, how is it going to affect the Sitemap Generator?

I hope that it sees canonical the same way google does as a 301 redirect, and skips to the appropriate page and adds THAT page to the sitemap.

Thank you.

currently it's not used, as it's better to avoid duplicate URLs in a different ways (with "robots noindex" meta tag or rel=nofollows or robots.txt), so that it's also applied to other search engines AND search engine will not have to retrieve the page just to find out that it is a duplicate.
