The XML page cannot be displayed - sitemap.xml

I seem to be having trouble with my sitemap.xml being generated.

Since I got my standalone sitemap generator working I just assumed everything was correctly generated in sitemap.xml. Since I was getting a successful report email.

I logged in to google webmasters today and it says the following.

Empty Sitemap
Your Sitemap does not contain any URLs. Please validate and resubmit your Sitemap.

I went and opened my sitemap.xml by browser and got the following message

The XML page cannot be displayed
Cannot view XML input using style sheet. Please correct the error and then click the Refresh button, or try again later.

XML document must have a top level element. Error processing resource '[ External links are visible to forum administrators only ];.

So I went and  opened the file in an editor and it is completly empty.

I checked the permissions on it and it is 0666.

Any ideas on what I need to do?

you have gzip compression option enabled, so you should submit sitemap.xml.gz instead.
