permission denied failed to stream error but permission /data is 777

I'm not sure what or when it happened, the sitemap now only runs through a few pages then pops up the permsission error.  For grins, I even gave 777 to the /pages directory too but no workie.

Did a search on the forum and it looks like the advice is to set full rights to the directory but hmmm....

Any ideas?  Crazy but I think Google already has cut back on my rankings since this started. Maybe about 2 weeks ago? but I'm just now discovering it.
