Crawl not working on new install - SM pages not created

Hello from Tucson, AZ

I have a new 3.0 install (not upgrade) on the above URL. The config took, but didn't write to any of the files. A  crawl generates this error URL below:

I have a LAMP server that requires altered permissions, 755 versus 777,  and 644 versus 666.  Ive tried both in/on the required dir and files,  to no avail. A crawl attempt generates this message: "No sitemaps found"

My fault, it was an issue with me... I had MY local IP address, in my Win hosts file.
