password set, now I can only see the main page

A new install. I set a log in and password and as soon as I click on any page in the tab I am directed to log in. I do and I see the main generator page, I click on a tab, I'm prompted to log in again, and yet again I am back on the main generator page!

I look in the data folder and there are numerous apache sessions... what's going on?

folder perms are as per the set up file.
