Help with sitemaps for newbies

Can someone please help me on an easy way for sitemaps . I know how to use the sitemap generator. Only problem is what do I do with it after. It says 2 steps and something about downloading and uploading that is where I am so confused . I am a quick learner just very new to this not sure what to do . Please help anyone. Really could use someone to walk me through it the first time  .

after sitemap is created with online generator, you should right-click on sitemap.xml link, save it to your computer, and then upload the file to your site.
