problems with sitemaps

i tried to create the sitemap few times but all had problem with google at some point.
can should i have 1 site map for the [ External links are visible to forum administrators only ] or should i have for every directory like: [ External links are visible to forum administrators only ]
www.mysite.com/section2/

or should i do something completely different?
