Sitemap question for new pages?

Hi,

I  have a question, if I built the xml sitemap file that contains link of 5000 pages, then a week later I add 10 pages on the site, if i generate the sitemap again, will it smart enough to only create the links for that extra new 10 pages to the existing sitemap xml file or it need to crawl that 5000 + 10 new pages again?

it needs to make full re-crawl, since new links could be added anywhere on the site and all pages need to be checked for that.
