error 'connection was reset' while updating the sitemap

I had been using my site map generator for a few weeks  perfectly until a few days ago. I now get this error:

error 'connection was reset' while updating the sitemap

I read a few other postings here and contacted my host 'Rochen' to increase memory_limit and max_execution_time settings but they say not on a shared server. However, I only have around 50 pages so I can't see the hosting provider to be the cause of this error especially as it worked fine beforehand!

I am using Joomla 2.5 for my website

I also tried in a different browser (Google Chrome) and get this error:

Error 324 (net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE): The server closed the connection without sending any data.
