sitemap.xml 404?

I've an issue with a site [ External links are visible to forum administrators only ] - I can successfully generate a map (apparently) yet the xml sitemap link gives me a 404, and Google Webmaster Tools cannot read it. I can view OK via ftp tho. HTML sitemap is fine.
Can anyone advise? Thanks

do you have .htaccess file in domain root folder? If yes, what is it's content? (possibly it overrides sitemap requests)
