I have a problem with "Sitemap file is not writable"

Hi

I have a strange problem, my sitemap generator stops working with warning "Sitemap file is not writable".

I chmod "sitemap.xml" to 666 and 777, and the warning goes away, but when sitemap crawler starts again, the crawler stops working after some time, and i get warning again "Sitemap file is not writable", and if i check sitemap.xml, it's not empty, some new urls with new dates are inserted.

What else should i check?
