Why is Google picking up pages with broken links which have been deleted?

Someone else had a similar problem to me which 'admin' managed to sort out.

Basically google is picking up as 'broken links' pages that were on a previous content management system. I now have a completely new site, albeit the domain name is the same [ External links are visible to forum administrators only ] but google doesn't seem to know that the old pages it's trying to search are dead.

How do I correct this error?

Hello,

as long as your old links return 404 Filenot found error, Google will drop them from the index eventually.
