large sitemaps set limit to 30k urls per sitemap
« on: December 15, 2010, 10:58:18 PM »
I just found some guidance on google.com that says the limit of urls per sitemap is 30k not 50k as stated elsewhere:

'Note: Though the documentation on Google.com gives a 50,000 URL limit, the actual limit for sitemaps generated automatically on the search appliance is 30,000.'

thought i would share this with other xml-sitemaps users

Hello,

that is limited for sitemaps created with "Google Search Appliance" software, it's not related to overall xml sitemaps submitted to Google (you can jsut submit sitemap in webmaster account to see that it's parsed correctly, including the number of URLs found by Google).

Well, I reduced my limit to 30k and still had to re-run it as the first of my three sitemap files was too large for Google - even with only 30k URLs.

As it takes me 4 hours to build a sitemap (with monitoring it manually to keep restarting it) its better to have a smaller limit and know it'll be accepted than create submit, reduce, create and so on!
