Cannot write to sitemap.xml
« on: October 13, 2011, 01:07:00 AM »
Though i have uploaded the sitemap.xml sitemap.html and sitemap.ror files and gave it  all 666, I still get the error message:
Sitemap file is not writable: /var/www/vhosts/mywebsite.com/httpdocs/sitemap.xml
Sitemap file is not writable: /var/www/vhosts/mywebsite.com/httpdocs/sitemap.html

I tried uploading sitemap.xml as a text file and as a binary and neither work.

Help appreciated :)
Thanks,

Jack

Hello,

did you upload files to domain root folder? (not in generator folder)

Hi,
Yes all files are upload to root folder where all html files are. i.e httpdocs
So it's httpdocs/sitemap.xml  (666)
httpdocs/ror.xml (666)
and it's httpdocs/generator/(all generator files)  'generator' folder is chmod 777 as is data and pages folder both 777

What you think? I'd give you the actual url if it does not show on public forum :)

It should be ok in this case. Can you provide a temporary ftp access for troubleshooting (via PM)?

I see that the sitemap.xml and sister files are inside the generator folder. I did not understand that from the instructions.
I have two newbie questions i have to ask :)

1. Do those files stay there? If so I thought they belonged in the root directory of my website and so should i move them for the search engines to:  mywebsite.com/sitemap.xml?

2. Second question regarding 'excluding urls'   I have a several framed pages. Should i include only the master page and all the frame pages or exclude the header frame page, menu frame page etc..?? Thank you for your guidance and your help!!

Re: Same problem...Cannot write to sitemap.xml

Hi,
Thank you for getting my generator to work. But i never found out what the problem was.

I tried installing the generator on another website and i get the same error: "Sitemap files are not writable"  (sitemap.xml sitemap.html and ror.xml)
This time i put the sitemap. xml and ror.xml files in the generator root folder and both gave them 666. Still no luck.

What am i missing? (besides understanding of script writing :)

Thanks for your help! I'd like to learn to do this myself :))))

Hello,

as mentioned in PM, on your server the "owner" userid for the folder containing sitemap should be the same as for php script file.
You should set generator configuration to store sitemap.xml in generator/ folder, and then copy .htaccess file from the first website that I created for you.

Thanks for you reply :)
Sorry for the continued questions....

To confirm I understand you correctly :)

1. "You should set generator configuration to store sitemap.xml in generator/ folder"

2. But once the sitemap.xml and ror.xml files are created, they should then be copied to the website root directory  (mywebsite/sitemap.xml), so that the search engines can find them. Is that Correct?

It will not be necessary if you will create .htaccess file in domain root (the same as in first website)
