why the small sitemap for a larger site?

Hi,

I am helping out two people with their sites. I created xml sitemaps but they don't include much! they are very small files that don't show most of the pages on the site! WHY??

Also, these sites are not being indexed by the search engines despite being submitted some time ago.

are these issues related?

the sites are:

[ External links are visible to forum administrators only ]
