Hosts-file bypassed?

How does the generator determine from what server to get the pages? Because I tried to fool the generator into indexing another server (a test server) by adding a line to the hosts file, but that doesn't do anything, it just indexes the live server.

How can this be achieved?

Our servers are all LAMP servers and we have a license for the sitemap generator.

You're right, of course, but that is not the answer.
Sorry that I was not clear about this: I use the same URL on live-server and test-server. That's why I am searching for a way to tell the generator to use a different IP address.
