Hi,
I was able to get over the memory problem and able to complete the sitemap which is now stored on my server.  Will google pick that up even though it is not html?

I had the option clicked to ping google upon the completion of the generation.  Is that all I have to do?

great!

Yes, google reads sitemap files in xml (xml.gz) format. If you have enable "ping google" option, it will be notified automatically.
You can also submit your sitemap files to the google webmaster account ([ External links are visible to logged in users only ])
to track the state of parsing etc.

Is there any permission setting for this file? It is by default 644.

Hi,

you should set 0666 permissions for sitemap file to allow Sitemap Generator to overwrite it when sitemap is re-generated.
