Files that do not exist on the server appear in Sitemap

For some reason the online sitemap generator is pulling up a huge list of pdf files that no longer exist on my server. Could this be from having the files listed in search engines? Still, wouldn't the listings be removed from google after some time?

Perhaps you still have links to those files somewhere on your site, although the files are not existing.
